Datsun - Sticker
Where Datsun came from (Japan origins)
-
The story starts with DAT, an early Japanese car name derived from the initials of the investors’ surnames (Den, Aoyama, Takeuchi).
-
The name evolved into Datsun in the early 1930s (often described as “son of DAT,” with a spelling change to “sun”).
-
As the company structure evolved, it became what we now know as Nissan Motor Co.—and Datsun became Nissan’s main passenger-car brand name for years.
Why you saw “Datsun” instead of “Nissan” overseas
Nissan exported cars under the Datsun name widely—especially to the United States—and only later pushed the corporate name Nissan globally. In the US, Nissan announced the switch from Datsun to Nissan branding in the early 1980s.
Famous Datsun vehicles
Depending on country and era, “Datsun” covered a lot of Nissan’s lineup. Some of the best-known classics include:
-
Datsun Z cars (like the 240Z / Fairlady Z family)
-
Datsun 510 (legendary for handling and motorsport)
-
Datsun Sunny (popular small car)
-
Datsun pickups (very common in many markets)
The modern revival—and the end (again)
Nissan revived the Datsun name around 2013 as a budget brand aimed mainly at emerging markets, and then decided to discontinue it again around 2022.
