Japanese Elderly Driver Suction Cup Sign
Japan’s elderly driver sign is called the Kōreisha mark (高齢者マーク), meaning “aged driver at the wheel.”
What it’s for
It’s a courtesy/safety marker meant to tell other road users: an older driver is operating this vehicle—give extra space and patience.
Who should display it
Japan’s Road Traffic Act (English translation) describes:
-
Age 70–74: should endeavour to display it if age-related decline is likely to affect driving.
-
Age 75+: must not drive a standard motor vehicle without displaying the mark on the front and rear.
What it looks like (and why)
-
Current design (since Feb 2011): a four-color, four-leaf clover–style mark (often nicknamed the “Yotsuba mark,” 四葉).
-
Older design (1997–Jan 2011): an orange/yellow teardrop “autumn leaf” style mark, which was criticized as sounding insulting—one reason it was redesigned.
Where it goes
Like the beginner mark, it’s intended to be displayed on both the front and rear of the vehicle.
