Nissan - Ken & Mary - Sticker
Nissan’s “Ken & Mary” advertising campaign (ケンとメリーのスカイライン) was an early-1970s series of TV/print ads created to promote the 4th-generation Skyline (C110). The campaign was so famous that the C110 Skyline is still widely nicknamed “Kenmeri” (Ken + Mary).
What the ads were like
-
They followed a young couple, Ken and Mary, on romantic road trips—lots of open landscapes, seasonal scenery, and a “freedom of the open road” vibe.
-
The series ran mainly from late 1972 into 1974 (even though the C110 generation itself was produced longer, 1972–1977).
-
The car often shown was the Skyline 2000GT-X (and later a sedan), and the spots became a cultural touchstone for the era.
The “Ken & Mary Tree” in Hokkaido
One of the campaign’s biggest real-world leftovers is the “Ken & Mary Tree”—a lone poplar in Biei, Hokkaido that appeared in the 1972 Skyline commercial and later became a named sightseeing spot.
Why it mattered
-
It humanized the Skyline—selling a feeling (youth, travel, optimism) as much as the car. That’s a big reason “Kenmeri” stuck as a household nickname decades later.
-
Nissan eventually moved on from the Ken & Mary concept as the Skyline evolved into later generations.
