In Japan, the yellow-and-green V/leaf-shaped symbol is the Shoshinsha mark (初心者マーク), also commonly called the Wakaba mark (若葉マーク). It means “beginner driver”.

What it means

  • It tells other drivers: this driver is new / may be less confident, so give them a little extra space and patience.

Who has to use it (and for how long)

  • If you have a regular license and it’s been less than 1 year since it was first issued, you’re required to display it on your vehicle (front and back).

  • Drivers can also keep using it longer if they still feel like a beginner.

Where it goes + penalties

  • It’s meant to be placed at designated positions on the front and rear of the vehicle.

  • Not displaying it when required is treated as a violation (Tokyo police guidance shows an example fine/points).

Fun extra: the emoji

  • The same symbol exists as the 🔰 emoji, used online to mean “I’m new at this.”
