Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. is a major Japanese automaker with roots in the early 20th century. Its story is usually traced through several key milestones and name changes. In 1911, entrepreneur Masujiro Hashimoto founded a company in Tokyo that later produced one of Japan’s earliest cars. In 1914, that car was introduced under the name DAT, an early marker of Japan’s developing automotive industry.

A critical corporate step came in 1933, when the company that would become Nissan Motor was established, and in 1934 it adopted the name Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. During the 1930s, Nissan expanded manufacturing capacity and began building a foundation for large-scale vehicle production.

In 1999, it formed a major strategic partnership with Renault, often referred to as the Renault–Nissan Alliance, created to improve financial stability and competitiveness. This alliance later broadened to include Mitsubishi, shaping Nissan’s global strategy in the 21st century.

A modern technology milestone arrived in 2010, when Nissan launched the LEAF, one of the first widely adopted mass-market battery-electric vehicles. In the 2020s, Nissan continued repositioning around electrification, software, and advanced safety technologies, while navigating intense competition and changing consumer expectations.
