The Honda Integra Type R (ITR) is Honda’s lightweight, high-revving, front-wheel-drive “Type R” coupe/sedan that became famous for razor-sharp handling, a helical LSD, close-ratio gearing, and a naturally aspirated engine that loves to live near redline. It’s one of those cars where the magic is less about straight-line speed and more about how it drives.

The two main “classic” Integra Type R generations

1) DC2 / DB8 (mid-1990s to early-2000s): the icon

This is the shape most people mean when they say “Integra Type R.” Honda didn’t just add power—it stiffened the body (extra spot welds/thicker metal in key areas), cut weight, upgraded suspension, and paired it with an LSD and a close-ratio 5-speed.
In the US (sold as the Acura Integra Type R), Honda quoted 195 hp at 8,000 rpm (plus other detailed spec changes)

Why people love it: ultra-communicative front end, playful balance on lift/brake, and an engine that begs to be worked hard.

2) DC5 (2001–2006): bigger, more modern, still hardcore (JDM Type R)

The DC5 brought the K-series and a 6-speed. Honda’s own release frames the DC5 as a full model change starting sales in Japan in July 2001.
The JDM Integra Type R (DC5) came with the K20A and the serious bits you’d expect: close-ratio 6-speed, LSD, Brembo front brakes, Recaros, stiffer suspension, etc.

How it differs from DC2: more refined and stable at speed, a bit heavier/less raw-feeling, but the drivetrain and front-end grip are still very “Type R.”

What “Type R” means here (the recipe)

Across both generations, the Integra Type R is basically:

  • Lightweight + stiffer shell

  • High-revving NA engine (VTEC / i-VTEC)

  • Close-ratio manual gearbox

  • Helical limited-slip diff

  • Track-focused brakes/suspension
That’s why reviewers have put it in “greatest FWD / greatest driver’s cars” conversations for decades

If you’re thinking of buying one (quick reality check)

  • Originality matters: lots are modified, tracked, or poorly “restored.”

  • Accident history: these are desirable and often stolen/crashed—check chassis rails, strut towers, panel gaps, and paint depth.

  • Mechanical wear: listen for gearbox synchro issues (especially hard 2nd/3rd shifts), and watch for tired bushings/engine mounts.

  • Rust: depends heavily on climate/import history—inspect properly.
